Here’s your #TapeTuesday! The Rentals – Friends of P. (1995)

Here's your #TapeTuesday. After the success of Weezer's 1994 self-titled debut (The Blue Album) bassist Matt Sharp booked studio time to record some of his new wave/ synth pop ideas. Instead of releasing your average solo album, Sharp recruited Pat Wilson from Weezer, put on a shabby looking suit, threw on some grubby looking glasses and deemed this new band "The Rentals." This is the "Cassingle" for the track "Friends Of P." which peaked at #7 on Billboards Modern Rock Chart due to it's ultra-catchy chorus of "If you're friends of P, well then you're friends with me." Flanked by Petra Haden and Cherielynn Westrich's sultry but robot-like background vocals, and Tom Grimley's blasting Moog lines, Matt Sharp had stepped out of Weezer's shadow. The backstory of the song is that it's about Ric Ocasek's super model wife Paulina Porizkova. During the sessions of Weezer's Blue Album (which Ocasek produced) Paulina claimed that no one had ever written a song about her. Sharp took on the task despite Ocasek's reservations about the idea. However the upbeat, friendly song eventually won everyone over. Weezer's label Geffen would not allow Petra and Pat's faces on the Cassingle cover so they were airbrushed out. The debut Rentals album, ironically titled Return Of The Rentals was released in October 1995 on Madonna's boutique label Maverick. It remains a great, singular sound in the midst of the post-grunge 90s. Purchased at Musicland in Oakbrook, IL December 1995. #TheRentals #MattSharp #PatWilson #PetraHaden #RachelHaden #TomGrimley #CherielynnWestrich #RodCervera #FriendsOfP #ReturnOfTheRentals
