Here’s your #TapeTuesday! No Doubt – Just A Girl (1995)

Here's your #TapeTuesday. From the "Cassingles" collection here is "Just A Girl" by No Doubt. Formed in 1986 in Anaheim, California by siblings Gwen and Eric Stefani, the band spent years toiling in the Ska/Punk rock underground finally releasing their major label self-titled debut album in 1992. The toiling wasn't over. The album absolutely stiffed in the grunge/altrock atmosphere of 1992, leaving the band in shambles. Eric Stefani grew increasingly depressed at the situation. His sister Gwen went the opposite direction and spent late night after late night recording new music and scraping together money for studio fees. They recorded Tragic Kingdom at 11 studios in 2 years. Eric became uninterested in the new material often skipping practices even though the practices were held at his house. He finally quit in late '94, having absolutely zero foresight of the massive hit they had already in the can. September 1995 they released "Just A Girl" to radio, some say ushering the whole ska revival of the late 90s. With it's chugging guitar line, Roland Jupiter 8 retro synth flourishes and Gwen's sarcastic cutesy preening, No Doubt really stuck it to the male dominated alternative rock scene. An instant breakthrough. Once the floodgates were open Tragic Kingdom would birth seven singles and sell over ten million copies, catapulting the band into super stardom. This song still sounds like a blast of fresh air. Purchased at Record Town, Oakbrook, IL in March 1996. #NoDoubt #JustAGirl #TragicKingdom #GwenStefani #TonyKanal #TomDumont #AdrianYoung #EricStefani #MatthewWilder #TraumaRecords #InterscopeRecords
