Here’s your #TapeTuesday! Ginuwine – Ginuwine… The Bachelor (1996)

Here's your #TapeTuesday. Ginuwine, born Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, released this, his debut album Ginuwine…the Bachelor, in October 1996 signaling a major sea change in modern R&B music. His career began as part of Swing Mob, a label founded by Devante Swing of the New Jack Swing forefathers Jodeci. It was there where he met the young upstart record producers Missy Elliot and Timbaland. In 1995 Timbaland began focusing his concerns on two new R&B hopefuls, Ginuwine and Aaliyah, producing the entirety of both singers debut albums. Tim's use of found sounds, layered ambience and hip hop aggression gave these albums an alien yet radio-ready sound that R&B had never experienced. "Pony" the first single, announces it presence with a loud burp/fart sounding bassline. It was a massive hit, heralding the beginning of Timbaland as a true innovator in both rap and R&B eventually working with literally every noteworthy urban act of the past 20 years. The rest of the album is less brash but still intriguing with an interesting cover of "When Doves Cry." Ginuwine… The Bachelor also began the trend that is now ultra-hip: the depressed lothario. He's handsome, he's got all the ladies, and he's still unhappy. There would be no Drake without this album. "The World Is So Cold" and "Lonely Daze" are examples of this. All in all, the combination of Timbaland's earth-shaking production style, Missy Elliot and Magoo's cameos and Ginuwine's sad sex symbol persona create a modern soul classic. Purchased at Record Utopia, October 2015, for $.49. #Ginuwine #Timbaland #MissyElliot #GinuwineTheBachelor #Magoo #Aaliyah #Sony #550Music
