Here’s your #TapeTuesday! The Beach Boys “Kokomo” (1988)

Here's your #TapeTuesday. The Beach Boys with their final #1 hit song "Kokomo." The song was used for the 1988 Tom Cruise-starring film Cocktails and the single release coincided with the movie's premier. The song was written by the long-tormented John Phillips, Scott McKenzie (of "San Fransico – Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair" fame) along with the Beach Boy Mike Love and California super-producer Terry Melcher. The mastermind of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, did not contribute to the writing or recording of the song. "Kokomo" references many exotic locales like "Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahama, Key Largo, Montego Bay" etc, however "Kokomo" itself is a fictional place dreamt up by the frequent Caribbean party animal John Phillips. The song was an instant smash, and despite the Beach Boys ubiquity, it was actually their first #1 hit in America since 1966's game-changer "Good Vibrations." The song remains an irresistible, though slightly light-weight piece of Island pop. From my Dad's cassette collection. #BeachBoys #Kokomo #Cocktails #JohnPhillips #MikeLove #ScottMcKenzie #TerryMelcher
