NEW ADDITIONS TO THE ANDY DERER SHOW CD WALL

SPRING 2018

This is the official list of CDs that Andy has added to his famous CD wall during the Spring of 2018. Andy owns over 4,000 compact discs and collects on a weekly basis. To slow down his purchases, he makes sure to play each title four times before filing the disc away onto the CD wall. Some are great, some are terrible, some are expensive, most are super cheap. The current record stores that Andy frequents, as of Winter 2018 are his own shop Blue Village Vinyl, Reckless Records (Loop, Wicker Park & Broadway locations), Half Price Books (Downers Grove & Countryside locations), Disc Replay (Downers Grove), Goodwill (Westmont), Amazon (Internet), Music Masters Worldwide (Downers Grove) as well as the Hillside Record Show. It’s funny, around the year 2000, there was nearly 30 record stores that Andy would patronize and now it’s down to a small handful. That reflects the huge sea change of the music industry. As always, thanks for listening to The Andy Derer Show and patronizing our record shop Blue Village Vinyl!

Most of you know that my father and I have purchased the great shop in Westmont known as Record Utopia/2nd Hand Mall! It is now known as Blue Village Vinyl. The previous shop Remember When Records was in existence from 1982 – 2011, so there is obviously lots of history there. The shop is not open yet, but you can already follow us on Twitter HERE for announcements.

Here’s your #TapeTuesday! Havana 3am – Havana 3am (1991)

Here's your #TapeTuesday! It's a promotional copy of the debut, 1991 self-titled album by Havana 3am. A supergroup in the broadest sense of the term, most of the press that the band garnered upon release was based on it featuring The Clash's former bassist Paul Simonon. Guitarist Gary Myrick had built a buzz around Texas, replacing Stevie Ray Vaughn in the band Krackerjack, then moving to LA in the early 80s where he had been a session musician & songwriter on John Waite's hit 1984 album No Brakes. Singer Nigel Dixon was frontman for the significant British rockabilly revival band Whirlwind, and he met Simonon while Whirlwind toured as an opening act for The Clash. After drummer Travis Williams responded to a local ad, the boys recorded the entire album in Japan and named the band/album after a famous 1950's mambo album by Perez Prado. The record captured a southwestern essence where rockabilly bumped shoulders with salsa rhythms, Morricone-esque guitar lines & dub reggae baselines. Dixon's voice hovered above the lean attack with a polished tenor that owed little to punk, yet with its concise song structures and throwback rockabilly image, they were clear punk-rock torchbearers. However, since the album was released months before Nirvana's Nevermind broke punk-rock to the mainstream, Havana 3am was immediately brushed aside & is now mainly a footnote of Paul Simonon's career despite the airplay of lead single "Reach The Rock." Nigel Dixon passed away from cancer in 1993 and Paul Simonon quit the band to focus on his artwork career. Gary Myrick put together a new lineup for one more Havana 3am album in 1996 but by then the jig was up. Myrick then went on the be an in demand session guitarist playing with Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, The Eagles, Todd Rundgren and Bonnie Raitt just to name a few. Simonon eventually re-entered the rock & roll world in the 2000's collaborating with Blur's Damon Album for the groups The Good, The Bad & The Queen and Gorillaz. The album remains a timeless, catchy collection of Tex-Mex rockabilly & it's a shame that this band couldn't have stuck around longer. #Havana3am #PaulSimonon #GaryMyrick #NigelDixon #TravisWilliams #IRSRecords
